How to prevent Weight Gain

Eating has long been known as a comforter. Through a chemical reaction, eating releases dopamine (the body’s natural pleasure drug) into the brain. So many people eat to comfort themselves. We eat to feel better when we are depressed, when we are bored, after a break up with a partner, because we lack self-esteem and to cover up or beat many other forms of discomfort.

Eating more calories than you can burn off will lead to weight gain. It is important for your mental and physical health to eat healthy and get exercise. Not to do so could be very detrimental. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%) qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more.

Fats that you eat do not turn into fat on your body because fat cannot be stored without the presence of insulin because insulin is the key to opening up the doors to store fat in fat cells. No matter how much fat you eat, it does not stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin! Only too many refined carbs can do that!

Exercise is the single most important and effective method of preventing or reducing menopausal weight gain. Exercise builds muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat cells. In addition to playing a huge roll in controlling weight, regular physical activity can also relieve or reduce the impact of many other uncomfortable physical and emotional effects of per menopause, including anxiety, mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia. Weight bearing exercise is also critical in the prevention of osteoporosis in older women.

While the ill effects of smoking indisputably outweigh the ill effects of being overweight, it is clear that avoiding both will lead to a healthier life and higher quality of life. Health problems associated with being overweight range from heart disease and stroke to diabetes and cancer. There are many ways to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time. Consider implementing a regular exercise routine and changing to a healthy diet. While these lifestyle changes seem dramatic, the resulting effects of these changes on health and quality of life are even more dramatic.
